Located northeast of Yonge and Bloor is the neighbourhood of Yorkville. The story of Yorkville is one that has been written many times in urban centers around the world.
- Derelict neighbourhood attracts starving artists due to cheap rents.
- Artists make neighbourhood hip and cool
- Trendy people and businesses move in, driving up rents and driving out the people who made the area hip in the first place.
In the case of Yorkville it was the epicentre of the hippie scene in 1960's Toronto, where the likes of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot and many others could be found gigging in the local bars and coffee shops.
Over time, Yorkville has transformed itself into Toronto's most upscale retail area, home to multi million dollar condo's, two hundred dollar haircuts and many high priced restaurants.
While it is not a place where I would hang out, the neighbourhood has some nice public spaces and there is no finer spot in the city to observe the perfectly coiffed blend of hotties and metrosexuals as they dash to their Hummers and Jags, $12 loaf of bread safely tucked under their well tanned and toned arms.
